Welcome, new soldier. YouGÇÖve just stepped into a sprawling hybrid playing world that mixes your typical soldier-role 1st-person shooter game into Role-play universe called New Eden. There are many opportunities here for your Racial Character to become rich and legendary. But New Eden is also a very dangerous place.
You come from your previous fps games with a favorite Role you played: Marksman, Scout, Corpsman, Machine-gunner, Grenadier. But the players here are becoming HYBRIDS of shooter and RPG activity. Eve-Online is the game that this game Dust came from. And Eve-Online has none of the typical "medic" "scout", "sniper" roles in it.
Eve-Online players spend years creating a "life" for their Racial Character, not choosing a role. When PS3 gamers learned that the Devs were creating Dust-514, players asked GÇ£how can my role possibly work when we have all these dropsuits and guns that are so multi-use and hard to categorize?!GÇ¥ The DevsGÇÖ response to us was equal to GÇ£This game is about fighting your OWN war. You want your Racial Character to profit in Dust?---then you MAKE your own rolesGÇ¥
Over the past three years or so, Dust-514 has nearly erased any of the fighting GÇ£rolesGÇ¥ you mastered in your other games, so donGÇÖt be a foolish merc---donGÇÖt look for your MedicGÇÖs gear and BAR-carrier here. As Dust has evolved, more and more players are finally adapting to the DevGÇÖs GÇ£you make your OWNGÇ¥ concept, and, sometimes without knowing it, we players have created the true GÇ£RolesGÇ¥ that reign in our Playstation half of New Eden.
So even though some of your dropsuits and gear may still have GÇ£sniperGÇ¥ or GÇ£medicGÇ¥ stuck on them, trying to perform these roles will not help you much in Dust-514.
Dust is filled with players who are making corporations for themselves, players collecting rare weapons and items to distribute as the key to make themselves wealthy, and second players trying to sabotage and steal from the first players in order to perpetuate their own privateer activities. You will meet players with all these types of GÇ£RolesGÇ¥ within your first 2 weeks of gameplay. You will learn to like or to despise each of these types of players within your first month of playing Dust.

If you're a casual player just looking to burn off some steam by slaying an effigy of your annoying boss, then a simple grunt or Frontliner is the comfortable and simple place to be.
But if you're an intrigued beginner looking to stay a while in New Eden, you should start at once to train yourself in one of these exciting careers. They are arguably the only true game "roles" that the player-corps around you will put a high value on, and that the individual players interacting around you are being powerfully influenced by.
CORP C.E.O. : She is a player who dreams of forming her own corporation of merc soldiers. Her soldiers fight under one company-name, and sometimes pay membership tax, or a portion of their battlefield ISK to fund CEOGÇÖs corporation. A Corp C.E.O can advertize her soldiersGÇÖ combat skill to any EVE-Online players out there looking to hire an assault force to claim or protect valuable facilities on a planet surface. Owning pieces of planets in EVE-Online costs money,GǪ pay a Corp CEO her price, and her soldiers will protect your valuable real estate.
TRADER : Not everyone stays in this game just to relentlessly shoot stuffGǪ Weapons and equipment costs a lot in the game, and several players have begun to step back from just plain fighting, and make even more money trading rare and sometimes reverse-engineered weaponry, than they ever could by just running around shooting at people.
FRONTLINER : This is the classic player in fps games, who holds a gun in hand and is the first to open fire, to kick down a door, to take a red area by force, and make first-kill contact with the enemy in every match. He cares little about wealth, just the ISK that's needed to replace his lost gear in combat, or the SP needed to educate his brain to operate newer and more dangerous models of his weapon and dropsuits. It doesn't matter if he wears the "Assault" dropsuit intended for him, or rigs one of the other dropsuit-types to serve an unorthodox tactic. Directly engaging and ambushing the enemy players is his only regular goal in this game. But without him, this game ceases to exist.
COMMANDO : Regardless of whether or not he chooses to wear the "Commando" dropsuit that was created to help him, this player changes his tasks and missions in the middle of any match. He may run up front as a deadly Frontliner for the first 10 minutes of play, then suddenly climb to a secluded roof to hunt enemy Dropships,GǪ and be highly skilled at BOTH jobs, because he has invested lots of Skill Points and ISK to become two experts in one.

ARTIFICER : A player who very seldom puts himself up front to engage the enemy alone and be shot at without having a good reason. His work usually involves full-time piloting vehicles, advanced SP skills on stationary or mounted turrets, or even supplying advanced LAVs, HAVs or Dropships to players on the team who don't have the skills or ISK to develop those vehicles themselves. Because his heroics often occur during quick drive-bys or many meters behind the front lines at an Installation or launchpad, he may not be seen or shot at by the same enemy at forward players. But the vehicle-loss and amount of time/SP needed to build premium versions of his machinesGǪ make his role very challenging to do.
SABOTEUR : Unlike other roles on the battlefield, his interest is never to help his side win a conflict. His interest is to enjoy a private reputation of exploitation and interruption, and interfere with or kill as many bystander players in the match as possible. This is done through exploitation of glitches in the maps, perversion of equipment used on the dropsuits, arguably purposeless harassment or assassination of isolated soldiers, fratricide of friendly players in Faction Warfare matches, joining a squad solely to obstruct and paralyze its effectiveness in the gameplay. Such players have existed in nearly every online game, and itGÇÖs rare that a player will ever step forward and say that battlefield sabotage is his fulltime career. But because in Dust, you lose hard-earned ISK and resources every time your life or your vehicle is destroyed, the attraction of disruption and sabotage as a full time role comes with much higher satisfaction in Dust than in many other games.
INFILTRATOR : Her role exists far higher and deeper than the simple matches we play. Usually working for her unidentified Corp_CEO, or hired by a player in EVE-Online, or even privateering for her own desires, her role involves human deception, not just fighting in a match. She will socialize with another player, to gain entry into the player's corp as a trusted member. She may fight in that corporation's public battles, and even contribute in FW matches that oppose her own Race or secret Corp,GǪ just for the opportunity to pass along information about their upcoming expensive PC battle, ruin their PC battle while standing beside them on the PC battlefield, or to access "treasurer" privileges in order to empty the corporation's funds. For the right motives or the right kind of pay, an Infiltrator can win the Trophy in this game for doing the most damage in a single move.
SCAMMER : ISK is a vital asset in New Eden, by the trillions in Eve-Online, but earned and lost by the hundred-thousands in Dust-514. The realtime chat-system and socializing has always allowed players to donate ISK to bankrupted strangers, even when some strangers are lying to receive easy money. But there is now also anGÇ£item tradingGÇ¥ portion of the game that is expanding, allowing a rapidly expanding environment of scamming, that exists almost entirely outside of the combat matches. Agreeing to GÇ£sellGÇ¥ or GÇ£tradeGÇ¥ a consignment of gear or rare items, then exploiting a playerGÇÖs trust after she has completed her part of the exchange, IS stealing. But stealing by GÇ£scammingGÇ¥ another player is certified perfectly legal in Dust 514, and has been an EXTREMELY profitable player activity in Eve-Online for years. So Scammers are here to stay, and may even have the opportunity to multiply profits by forming whatever player-networking schemes their cleverness can come up with. If you decide to become a Scammer, you have a very high-profit and low-loss career ahead of you. If you despise that kind of player in New Eden, learn ways to protect yourself from them.

SENTINEL : Because of the heavy dropsuit and heavy gun-gear it links with, many individual new players grab this as a "role" to give them personal protection when they realize how dangerous Dust combat is. But the Sentinel was never designed to be an individual loner, roaming around like a turtle with a scary gun. The more veteran gamers in Dust 514 will refer to this role as the GÇ£FattieGÇ¥ or GÇ£SentinelGÇ¥ because it more correctly reflects the SentinelGÇÖs importance to them, than when new players simply call it a GÇ£HeavyGÇ¥. Other fps games may use GÇ£the heavy playerGÇ¥ role to neutralize enemy air-machines, enemy tanks, and stationary gun-turrets. Dust is NOT the same. The SentinelGÇÖs job is the GÇ£plow the roadGÇ¥ annihilation of enemy infantry players before theyGÇÖve had time to organize themselves, or to cut a hole through enemy infantry who are strongly defending an area, and primarily (and possibly exclusive to Dust 514) to stay behind and defend an area indefinitely, by cutting down any enemy infantry as they try to approach it. Human-Shield. Guard. Defender. GÇ£SentinelGÇ¥.
LOGISTICS : This player runs close beside her fellow players on the ground at all times (unlike an Artificer, who often can or must support her troops from a distance). The Logistics player provides supporting equipment and information almost always using short-ranged items powered from her distinct and expensive dropsuit. Her equipment only helps her buddies from a short range, so she must travel closely with her people during the fight. But her dropsuit's design doesn't leave her with much weaponry to attack an enemy with, so she must avoid being the first to make contact or being the first to step through the doorway. Of all the roles in Dust 514 that primarily don't use the gun, the Logistics player is best player to make a descent ISK profit at the end of a battle. Artificers, Recon, Scouts, are often famous for travelling the greatest distances back and forth across the map, and getting the least WP or ISK for all their effort. But a descent-skilled Logistics player, if she stays glued to her squad and delivers the right supplies to them even under the most lethal enemy fire, can earn as much as the other support players combined.
SCOUT : A Scout role may be the most abused and distorted role in the game. The temptation is always there to sneak around and solo-kill, with concealment gear and close-up, one-shot-one-kill weapons. But because of the unique abilities of the equipment available in Dust, the Scout can bring the most damage and success for his team by travelling as undetected and far away from shootouts as possible. She may even use items as unexpected as a Logistics dropsuit, to provide as much tactical adaptability to the battle, and remain as completely unnoticed and autonomous from the rest of the players as she can. If a player runs around with a cloak, a knife, a boosted biotics jumpsuit, and a shotgun playing ninja-assassin all day, his scout dropsuit does not qualify him as a GÇ£scout playerGÇ¥. When the red team loses the match simply because every CRU on the map was kept blue throughout the match while the rest of us were busy fighting, or an enemy HAV suddenly explodes on a mine-trap when trying to use the only road that can reinforce their losing team, or when our redlined players are saved from slaughter by a couple of uplinks that magically appear clear across the other side of the battlefield, that was a true Scout who got that done.

RECON : If you have the brains that can GÇ£readGÇ¥ the little moving players on a map, and GÇ£assessGÇ¥ whatGÇÖs going to happen next (GǪyouGÇÖll know what I mean if youGÇÖve seen this in yourself during the BF4 or CoD type game you played), then you are wasting yourself just being a Frontliner or Logi. The deeper matches of Dust need you as a Recon player. It is one of the newest roles in the game, being slowly more encouraged by the gameGÇÖs Developers (who always promoted Dust to be a thinking-playerGÇÖs game). If youGÇÖre a freshly-new player to Dust, youGÇÖve actually been given a starter-dropsuit type that is specifically designed for the Recon role. But whatever suit she chooses to wear, the Recon playerGÇÖs job involves communicating as much noticeable information as she can to the team, so the team can re-direct themselves and win the match by heading off the enemy attempts to move around the map. GÇ£CommunicatingGÇ¥ almost always means using the MIC system. If you watch an Eve-Online video, the players you hear directing warp jumps, calling out incoming threats, confirming the plan, giving the signal to change weapons and open fireGǪ is not just some loudmouth squadleader; thatGÇÖs the nearest example Eve-Online has of Directing and Recon. In Dust, a Recon player may be theTerrestrial Combat Officer for the Corp_CEOGÇÖs PC battles, and often is the best person to be Squadleader in Pub Contracts and FW matches. Her WP earnings in the matches may not be good. SheGÇ¥ll be spending more time reading the battle than firing her own weapons. Eyes on the pull-down map every minute means she sacrifices some ability to spot threats approaching her. So she needs to stay mostly separated from the center of the firefights, a stay mostly evading enemy attempts to engage her. A Recon player might choose to squat on roofs or crawl the edges of the map, with a sniper rifle GÇ£just in caseGÇ¥ (partly resembling the slowly phasing out GÇ£sniperGÇ¥ role thatGÇÖs becoming less and less helpful to Dust team play). Some clever Recon players orbit the map in a tricked-out LAV, so they can stay mobile enough to evade enemy, but are able to distract/harass enemy whenever itGÇÖs tactically needed. If our skilled team gets outclassed in a FW or PC battle, and you think it was because GÇ£we were proto-stompedGÇ¥, youGÇÖre wrong half the time. Half the time we lose because they had at least one descent Recon player on their team, and we had jack-none in our team.
ANTI-VEHICLE : Several GÇ£rolesGÇ¥ are proving incapable of keeping up with the technology and tactic of the enemy players in Dust: Medics can hardly prevent their team from catastrophically losing all their clone reserves, when enemy players deliberately camp a fallen soldier to lure and kill every medic along with his patient. Snipers can no longer rack up enough kills to snatch the battle from enemy players whoGÇÖve learned to stay in motion and use vehicles to barricade the areas they need to access. Among these fading roles, Anti-Vehicle is managing to survive and be needed in Dust. Enemy Vehicles in Dust 514 can flip the side thatGÇÖs winning faster than youGÇÖve experienced in other combat fps games, and they have the ability to stay in the match longer than the vulnerable tanks and mechs in other games. The specialized weapons used by dedicated SP-boosted A/V players are needed in nearly 7 out of every 10 matches. The GÇ£needGÇ¥ is still high, but the GÇ£rewardGÇ¥ that comes to Anti-Vehicle players is often very low. ThereGÇÖs a technology struggle going on in the game between players who want A/V weapons to be weakened in fairness to the Vehicle player, or be strengthened in fairness to the Anti-Vehicle player. On the battlefield, this means that you will be struggling hard to successfully destroy what you spend time shooting at. An A/V soldier isnGÇÖt paid very much, nor sought after and hired by player-corps very much, if he isnGÇÖt able to cripple or GÇ£destroyGÇ¥ very much. You not only face better and better fitted enemy vehicles, but also higher and higher experienced drivers who snatch a lot of your kills right out of your hands. The only way to deal with this problem is to put your merc character through very deep SP-training to access powerful bonuses for your A/V weapons (and not just GÇÿunlock the proto-versionGÇÖ of those weapons). Only those players who are committed to long months of Skill-tree unlocking become the kind of Anti-Vehicle player enemies fear, and player corps want to hire in their campaigns.
In New Eden, so much of a player's success among other players relates to the value you can show to ambitious player-corps, the wealth you can accumulate for yourelf, and the profit-transaction you can generate by finding insightful players to converse with. In Dust, Specialization is the path to all these things. In Dust,"shooting" is only a path to the cycle of fun death. GǪMostly yours.

I meat a player in "local" who found out I was interested in a certain piece of gear,GǪ an item that was not yet tradeable, so I could neither offer a buy, nor could he carry out a real sell. It's NOT tradeable.
But when I asked how much he would ask for an item like that if he could physically sell oneGǪ he thought "Ah-HAA, you're trying to trick me, Celesta---you're trying to scam the price down so you can steal them off me for cheap. I'm no fool, SEE, I caught you in your scamming---NIce try, but I revealled you're schemeGǪ" GǪ.I didn't want to try to remind him that we're talking about an item that CAN'T be traded---you can't send me the item--we're just chit-chattingGǪ. I just told him instead, that we should just close the subject, and I'll just calmly ease over towards the door (no sudden moves), and bye-bye now.
To which he replied "NO, I didn't say I wasn't interested in selling these to you! But YOU tell me your price! You were the one who tried to scam me--don't get upset and walk away from the deal just because I spotted you trying to trick me! What's your pricGǪGǪGǪ.."
WhewGǪ Scamming should be a neutral and moderate aspect of the game, as it is in Eve-Online, so that paranoia like that doesn't become the general disease.
I suspect in Eve-Online, 90% of the population is not trying to heist or deceive each other. The environment is New Eden is safer than that, and the % of that kind of player is much lower than you might think. Eve-Online is still super-BRUTAL the say Dust only USED to be. So the typical Capsuleer is too busy trying to survive and coordinate with her people, to be trying to make a career of scamming. Dust 514 might surpass their scam %, but some smart trading habits could easily keep them under control.

It's also interesting to notice that, of all the roles listed here, "Scammer" seems to be the role that completely shocks and enrages New Players the mostGǪ
I think it helps prove the point that Eve Dust 514 is a game that contains that "player-social interaction" component that Playstation Console players have NEVER really been exposed to before. They just can't seem to conceive of another player in their game deliberately tricking them into being robbed of something. ...

Thanks for the read! This is an excellent detail of a typical low-rent Scamming scheme in Eve-Online. I think your explanation of the reasons for Dust Chats being flooded with Scammers is very accurate. And I'm happy this post was on my thread----Kudos, Llamastar!
Some of the explanation here may go a little over the heads of a Newberry in Dust, but it is vital information to read nonetheless.
Dust is still very, very, very young compared to the parent game EVE-Online, but I'm sure Scammer players in Dust are dreaming of being able to expand to the levels revealed in your Link.
